Ok...so I am trying to put a picture on my profile...and it works for a day...and then seems to go away....so I am going to keep this post up...and see if that works...so I am not trying to just keep a random picture of myself up on my blog!!

New changes and a fun weekend!

This past weekend was a weekend of change and a lot of fun! First....on Saturday I moved out of my house and in with a family from my church here in Guatemala. They are such a blessing in my life and I am so thankful that they were so willing to let me move in with them. I am sharing a room with the oldest daughter of the family Carol. She is lots of fun! We have stayed up late every night talking!! I really like living with a family...don't get me wrong I enjoyed living on my own, but there is just something different and special about living with a family. I am excited to live with a Guatemalan family and learn even MORE about the Guatemalan culture. I know it will be good for my Spanish, because even though all of the 3 kids of the family who are my friends speak English...I am still around Spanish everyday! It's just nice having a family!

Last night after we were all done eating we had a little devotional time and time praying for each other. In that moment I just thought about how blessed I am, and how wonderful God is. He has provided so much. Way more than I could have ever imagined...I still think I am trying to understand it all, but God is so good! I am so thankful for everything He has given me and provided for me.

On Sunday and Monday (Monday was a holiday in Guatemala) I went to Panajachel (a town located on Lake Atitlan) with the Mata's (the family I live with), Mariu, Andrea, Pablo and David. It was a lot fun. It was really nice to get out of the city and enjoy being in nature and seeing God's creation! It was nice to just relax and hang out with friends. We walked a lot, took a boat to a beach and swam in the lake. It was just a good, fun relaxing weekend!

I just want to thank God for everything He is doing in my life, He is providing so much and so much more than I could have ever expected. It's all about having faith, even when it's hard to!

Amazing Women!!

I had the amazing opportunity to serve along side some amazing women almost 2 months ago. I am sorry it has taken me this long to post about my experience on my blog. The first week of March I had the opportunity to join Wooddale Church from Minnesota. They were here in Guatemala on a short term missions trip. They have been coming to Guatemala for 12 years! They have a great ministry and it was wonderful getting to know all of them!

I had the privilege to join 4 amazing women and help translate for a home visitation ministry. For five days we went to different towns and visited families. We had the opportunity to enter many homes and pray for those who had needs such as, sickness, financial, spiritual, loss of a loved one, a son or daughter who had fallen away from the Lord, etc... It was a great week, but also it was also emotionally draining to see need after need.

One of the highlights for me was the opportunity to spend each day with the 4 women from Wooddale. As we walked around each town I had the opportunity to get to know each one of them better, and it was refreshing to have some time just sharing what God is doing in my life!

I am thankful for the time that I had with this ministry and these amazing women!!

Prayer

Hey family and friends!

Just wanted to send out a prayer request to all of you....I can't share the details right now, but I just need some prayer. Please pray for God to provide and provide a miracle. I had a hard day and I have to do some hard things, but I know that God is HUGE and bigger than anything going on right now.

I will share more details when I can, but if you could just lift me up in prayer right now I would really appreciate it. Thanks for all of your love and support!

Prayer of Detachment

Last week in our weekly meeting as a team Kyle shared this prayer with us. Just like the other one I posted, this one really made me think. I hope you find this as an encouragement and something that you will pray as well!

Peace Prayer

Two weeks ago I was with a team from Wooddale Church from Minnesota and during the devotional time they passed out The Peace Prayer (attributed to St. Francis of Assisi). It was something that just spoke to me and touched my heart and I wanted to share it with all of you!

Lord, make us instruments of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let us sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is discord, union;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
Grant that we may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and
it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

A year and a half....

So exactly today I have been in Guatemala for 1 & 1/2 years. I have been thinking about it a lot today. Just reflecting on my time here and thinking about how this culture has become so much of who I am now. I love it here in Guatemala. I love the people, I love the culture, I love Spanish, I love my church here, I love my friends here, and I love my teammates that I work with at SEPAL.

I have been thinking about how I have about 6 more months on this adventure in Guatemala before God leads me on a new adventure. I know 6 months is a lot of time, but this year and a half have gone by so fast, so I know these 6 months will fly by!

I am excited for the rest of my time here, but sad too when I think about how little amount of time it is. I am just trying to take it one day at time and enjoy each day with my friends and my time in this wonderful country.

One thing I am looking forward to most is this summer! I have the opportunity to lead the summer team (STEP). It is a group of college aged and older who come to Guatemala for 7 weeks to be exposed to missions and to Guatemala. I am going to have a great team of leaders helping me this summer!

Would you pray with me during my last few months here? Pray that even though my time is short it won't seem like it and the relationships I have will continue to grow. Would you also pray for the summer team? That we will seek God in all of the planning of the summer, and that God would be forming the right team to come this summer.

Why couldn't it have been Mickey Mouse??....Oh...the adventures of living in GUATE!

So.....Tonight I wish that I saw Mickey Mouse.....but instead I saw......

A REAL MOUSE!!!!





I was lying in bed....just about to fall asleep when I start to hear this noise. I am trying to figure out what it is. It is at my window...which is right above my head. I keep listening and think maybe it is outside of my window. I keep listening and think maybe there is a rat outside of my window, or maybe it's the wind, and as I keep listening I think maybe it's a moth trapped behind my curtain. So...I continue to lay there and then I feel something!!

I get up...turn on my light and pull my curtain back to look...and all I see is something moving. This thing moves up my curtain and then on top of my curtain rod I see it....THE MOUSE!!! I scream and run out of my room. I call for my roommate Rebecca. By now it is midnight...and she has been asleep for almost 2 hours!!

As I think about if I should knock on my roommates door and wake her up I am standing at my doorway...and the mouse is still on my curtain rod just staring at me. I finally decide I should wake Rebecca up, because I need help. I don't know what to do with the mouse, and I certainly can't fall asleep knowing there is a mouse in our house.

So...I knock on Rebecca's door, and open it and say, "Rebecca...there is a mouse in my room." She wakes up, not too sure what is going on. I tell her come on....come in my room and look. She comes and the mouse has moved from the curtain rod and is climing down my curtains, but behind the curtains...so you can only see the curtains moving. I try to show Rebecca that the curtain is moving, but she is still waking up and doesn't see it....but then the mouse goes back to the curtain rod and Rebecca see's the mouse...we both run out of my room screaming!

We don't know what to do....there is a mouse in my room!! There is no way that I can sleep knowing that the mouse is in my room. We finally get brave and go back in my room to look for the mouse. We don't see it...and now the problem is finding it!! I just moved back into our house after house sitting for 3 months...so I have stuff all over my room. We get two brooms and start banging the floor and everything we can to try and scare the mouse. We start to move everything out of my room. We have almost everything moved out...except a few things in my closet...a blanket and two plastic bags.

I am moving a box out of room when Rebecca screams...and slams my door shut!! She has just spotted the mouse!! So...now we decide we need to come up with a plan...how are we going to trap this mouse. So we get an empty box and we are going to trap the mouse and then take it outside. We go back in my room and start looking for the mouse...and we can't find it. We look under my bed...behind the curtains, everywhere!! Then Rebecca lifts up the blanket in my closet where it is folded and there is the MOUSE!!!

We trap it with the box and while the box is on it's side we try to get the blanket in the box. When we think the blanket is in the box we decide to lift the box upright and close the top as fast as we can!!! We succesfully have the mouse in the box, or so we hope!!! We take the box outside and dump out the blanket that we hope the mouse is still in. We lift up the blanket and there is the mouse!!! It's outside!!!!

We checked the rest of my room and no sign of any other mice...and no way it could have come into my room through my room!! No holes or anything. So now that it is 2am I think I have finally calmed down...and I think I can go to sleep without worrying about a mouse!!

Oh...the adventures of living in Guatemala!!!

P.S. My roomate thought I should add that about 5 times during the process of trying to capture the mouse I said....this is why I need a husband, so he can do this for me! ha ha :-)

Ecuador!!!

Last week I got home from going to Ecuador for 2 weeks! I was excited to go to South America for the first time, go to a conference for Latin American youth, and to have the opportunity to serve for one week after the conference.

The conference was great, and it was encouraging to see over 400 Latin American youth be excited about missions, but more importantly wanting to serve God wherever and whenever He calls them!

One of the highlights from the conference was the last night. The guest speaker was the grandson of Nate Saint. Nate Saint was one of the five martyrs killed by the Auca Indians in Ecuador in the 1950's. Actually the Sunday after the conference was the 50th Anniversary of their death. Also at the conference as the grandson of the Auca Indian that killed Nate Saint. The amazing thing about this story is how through the deaths of these martyrs, God was glorified. The men that killed these 5 missionaries came to know Jesus. The grandson of Nate Saint (Jesse) was baptized in same river where the body of his grandfather was found. The Auca Indian that killed his grandfather was the man that baptized him!

After the conference I had the opportunity to serve with 3 other people from all over Latin America. We (Samuel- from the Dominican Republic, Noe- from El Salvador, and Diana- from Ecuador) went to an island called Isla Santay. It's an island in the middle of a river close to the coast of Ecuador. There are about 200 people who live on the island. They live without lights, bathrooms, or running water.

There is no church on the island...but there is a church that is working regularly on the island, sharing the gospel and helping on the island. 2 years ago they build 36 houses, and they also married 20 couples on the island. Before this, no one was married on the island...they just lived together.

While we were on the island we slept in tents and did various things on the island. Every morning we helped several men cut down bushes and shrubs. They are hoping to clear land to grow fruits and vegetables to start to build a little bit of economy on the island. A big city and market are only about 15 min away from the island, so there are opportunities to sell things in the market. In the afternoons we visited the families on the island, and every night we had a program for everyone on the island.

It was fun working with the team...and definitely a growing and learning experience! Thank you so much for all of your prayers during my time in Ecuador!!

It's Holiday Time!!

I can't believe December is almost over already...and Christmas this weekend! This Christmas I was invited to spend Christmas with a family from my church. I was so excited when they invited me! They are a family that is very special to me, and has taken me in like family. It will be fun to celebrate Christmas with Guatemalan. I will take pictures of my time with them and put them on here after Christmas!

I am sad that I won't be able to spend Christmas at home. I always love Christmas time with my family and the traditions we have...but I am know that I am supposed to be here in Guatemala right now, and even though I won't be home the Mata Family will take great care of me and make me feel right home.

I am so thankful for the many blessing God has placed in my life! He has surprised me and shocked me so much in the last couple of weeks! My friends here have been incredible. Every time I am blown away by how much they care for me and include me. It's a blessing that is beyond words.

I am also thankful for the blessing of wonderful supporters back home. It is so amazing to know that I have family and friends back in the States that care for me and are lifting me up in prayer! Thanks!!

In November I had the opportunity to go back the Arizona to be in Chris and Jen's wedding! It was a lot of fun! It was a blessing to be able to spend time with my family and my friends. I was there for 10 days, and it wasn't enough! If I didn't get to see you when I was back I am sorry!

It was a lot of fun to catch up with everyone, and be back in Arizona. It is amazing how my time there was different than when I was back in May. In May, I didn't want to come back to Guatemala. Things were comfortable in Arizona, and it was hard in Guatemala. This time it was good to be back and see everyone and reconnect with everyone, but I missed Guatemala. I missed my friends here in Guatemala. I wanted to come back!

It's amazing how things changed in a couple of months! God is amazing. He has provided some great friends here in Guatemala and a great church family. I love the team I work with, and I love my church. I am praising God for the relationships I have here!

Thanks for all of your prayers! It means a lot to me!

A new experience for me...

They just built a brand new World Gym down the street from house, and I decided to get a membership there! It just opened yesterday. One of my teammates (who also got a membership) and I decided to meet there this morning at 6 to try the aerobics class. I was a little nervous because I haven't been in an aerobics class since probably high school, and it was going to be all in Spanish!

Well...I survived!! I actually loved it! It was a new experience going to an aerobics class in Spanish, and learning some new worlds for the dance moves. Mostly I just watched the instructor and tried to follow what he was doing! It was a lot of fun, and I look forward to the many more aerobics classes to come!

Here is a picture of the University group from my church, El Camino here in Guatemala. This picture was taken on a retreat during Holy week last Easter. It has been great to be a part of this group, and make friends with Guatemalan who are around my age.

It's been a long time since I have been the "new girl" anywhere. I have had the same friends back in AZ for many years. I lived at home and always had someone around. This year in Guatemala has been great, but it definitely has been lonely at times, but it has been good to be the "new girl." It has taught me a lot and stretched me.

One thing I really like about the University group at El Camino is that they are a close group. They really care about each other. It has taken time to build relationships and friendships with people in the group, but I am finally feeling like I am part of this group, and I feel like I have a "home" at my church.

You are so beautiful...

The purpose of my blog is share snapshots of my life here in Guatemala. As it may surprise some of you (hint of sarcasm) having blonde hair and blue eyes I don't look like anyone from Guatemala. :-) When I first arrived here in Guatemala it would bother me when I was walking in the parking lot or walking through the grocery store and people were staring at me. I knew they were probably staring at me because I looked different them. I have fair skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes, and they were all probably wondering why I was in Guatemala.

During the summer I went to Payless with the STEP girls, because one of them needed a pair of shoes. As I was helping them find shoes, one of the employees asked us if we needed any help. At the time we were just looking, so I thanked the employee, but told him we were just looking. He then went on to say (like a good employee), "Well, I am here if you need any help." We continued to look at shoes, and one of the girls needed to ask if they had shoes in a certain size. So our new friend who worked at Payless was right there waiting to help. So, I asked him about the shoes and he started looking. He started up a conversation with me and asked why I was in Guatemala, introduced himself to me. This is quite common here in Guatemala, for someone to start a conversation with you. People here are very friendly, something I really like about Guatemala. Well...In the middle of the conversation, the Payless employee stops talking and puts his hand on my arm and says, "You are so beautiful...You have the most beautiful eyes." When he says this, I say thanks and try to keep the conversation going, but he goes on to say that whenever I come to Payless he will be there to help me and give me a good deal. All, I could was laugh about it afterwards. It's not like it happens all the time, but the Latin culture is just different here. There are times when I go to the movies or to a store that the guy behind the counter will make a comment about my eyes, and how beautiful they are.

So...because of this happening it got me thinking. I know they are just interested because I look different them, and I can't help to think that when I am in AZ and I see someone who looks like they are from another country I am interested too. I start to think...what is their story? I wonder why they are here. People from other countries are interesting. I know living here in Guatemala I will never look like a Guatemalan, and I will never "fit in." I will stand out, which a lot of the time can be uncomfortable, but it's amazing how God can open doors because I look different.

It's amazing what can happen on a chicken bus!

I wish I had a picture of a chicken bus to show you, but I will just try to describe it to you! A chicken bus is one of the main transportations here in Guatemala. Picture a school bus, because that's basically what they are, old school buses from the States, repainted on the outside to be a lot more colorful.

I went with the STEP team this summer to San Pedro La Laguna. As we were riding one of these chicken buses back to Guatemala City (about a 3 1/2- 4 hour drive), several things happened that I had never seen before!I have been on chicken buses not a lot, but several times. This time when I was on the bus it was the most full I have ever seen a chicken bus! The motto for buses here in Guatemala is, "there is always room for one more!" As I was on this bus, I thought there is no way we can fit anyone else on this bus. The seats are like a school bus, where 2 kids can fit on a seat and 3 can squish, but they aren't that comfortable, well every seat on this bus had, 4 people to a seat! No joke! And there were people standing in the aisle, with no room to move, or breathe (well that may be an exaggeration, but you get the idea)! Even with the bus this full, the bus driver kept stopping for people, and I kept thinking how is this person going to fit, and how is the bus attendant able to keep track of who has paid? How is he even going to be able to collect the money? You don't pay when get on the bus, the bus attendant comes through the aisle and asks for money. As each new person got on the bus, the attendant kept asking everyone to get closer and move back, but I look back and there really isn't anywhere to go!

So, my question of how the bus attendant was going to collect money was soon answered! He opened a few windows (I wasn't sure why he did this, but I later found out why), and he started climbing on all the seats. It's a good thing he was a little guy, because if he was any bigger I think he would have been hitting his head! Yes, he literally climbed on top the seats and like Spiderman (that's what some Guatemalan's were calling him on the bus), he crawled through the whole bus collecting money and trying to place people so he could make more room! He got to the back of the bus, so I couldn't see him anymore, but a few minutes later he appeared back up front through the front door! No, we didn't stop so he could move up front, he went out the back door, climbed on top of the bus and then used the windows he opened to climb back to the front door. I was amazed! He was like a little Spiderman, climbing all around a moving bus, and doing it like it was nothing! These are things that can be a normal occurrence here in Guatemala!

Whew!! Sorry that was a long explanation! So...If you are still reading this, there is more to my bus experience!! As we got closer and closer to Guatemala City, many people exited off the bus, the bus was still full, but there was definitely a lot more room, only 3 to a seat instead of 4! For about 30 min. of the bus ride I was just sharing my seat with one of the STEP girls (Erin), but then we stopped in a town called Chimaltenango, which is about 45 min- 1 hour outside of Guatemala City.

When we stopped in this town a girl (Alejandra) sat down in the seat with Erin and me. She started talking to us, asking us questions about why we were in Guatemala, if we liked Guatemala, etc... She was taking the bus in to the City, because she studies at the public university there. Alejandra seemed really interested in why we were in Guatemala, and interested in getting to know us better. The STEP girls and I were about to get off the bus, when she asked for my cell phone number, and we made tentative plans to hang out when the STEP group had left. So, we exchanged phone numbers, and as soon as I got off the bus she text messaged me. Saying that she was glad to meet us and looks forward to hanging out!

What struck me most about what happened on the bus with Alejandra, is a prayer that I have prayed off and on. For the last 6 years or so I have sometimes felt like I am in a "Christian bubble." I would pray and ask God to bring someone in my life who doesn't have a relationship Jesus. Someone who I can build a friendship with, and through my loving them, hopefully they will see the love of Jesus and I will have opportunities to share about the love of Jesus! I am pretty sure Alejandra does not have a relationship with Jesus, and when I least expected it God brought someone into my life. She sat right next to me on the bus!

We have been text messaging back in forth for the past month. We still don't have plans to hang out, but she called me a week ago and left me a message, saying she would still like to hang out and to give her a call. So, I am going to call her!! I am excited to see what might develop through this friendship. She lives about 45 min. away from me, but everyday she studies at the University that is only about 5 min. away from the SEPAL office, so there is no reason why I can't hang out with her! God answered my prayer, when I least expected it!

When you think about it can you pray for Alejandra? Pray that this friendship can continue to develop. I will keep you updated about what happens!

A reminder of why I am here...

At the end of May I had the opportunity go home for almost 3 weeks for my sisters high school graduation. I was looking forward to going home and seeing my family and friends for the first time in almost 9 months. The first week or so it was hard to transition back into living in Arizona, and I definitely went through some culture shock and wished I was back in Guatemala. The last week I was home things started to get comfortable again. I loved how I could just pick up the phone and call one of my friends to hang out, I missed being able to do that in Guatemala. Driving was so much easier, the food was familiar, everyone spoke a familiar language, it felt comfortable again.

When it was time for me to come back to Guatemala, I started to question my call. Life was so much easier back in Arizona. Why did I want to come back to Guatemala? Where at times I felt lonely, sometimes it was hard to communicate, and things were not familiar. It was probably harder saying goodbye to my family and friends this time than when I left last September.

When I got back to Guatemala I started reading Joshua. The first chapter starts out by describing the command and the calling of Joshua. When I read verse 9 of chapter 1 something about it spoke to me. I had heard the verse many times, but with my struggle of being back in Guatemala, God used this verse to remind me. Joshua 1:9 says, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." I then went back to Deuteronomy 31 where Moses tells Joshua of his calling. Deuteronomy 31:8 says, "The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."

Did you catch the word "before?" Reading those two verses encouraged me and reminded me that God has called me to be in Guatemala right now. He has gone before me, and He will never leave me.

Throughout these past few months I had the opportunity to help lead and coordinate the STEP program. The STEP team was here in Guatemala for two months (this is the same program I was a part of in 2001). It was an amazing time. One of our trips was to this village called Campur. Youth from my church here in Guatemala (El Camino) joined us on this trip. Watching the youth from El Camino serve, gave me goosebumps and brought tears to my eyes. Seeing Pablo step up and lead programs, seeing Josue lead worship through his gift of playing the guitar, and seeing the other youth love on kids, and just being willing to serve wherever, reminded me that this is why I am here.

It's not about me. It's not about me leading a program, or being in front of a group, but it's about the opportunity to come along side the youth and encourage them. Seeing the youth from El Camino serve people from their own country, really impacted me. God used them and our trip to Campur to remind me why He has called me to be in Guatemala right now.

So I am finally joining the blog world!!

I finally figured out how to set up a blog, and I am officially joining the blogging world! My hope is to be able to keep everyone updated more often, and to give you little snapshots of my life here in Guatemala!
